SPSC SUP Open + Wingfoil Session

We are EXCITED to announce that the first Open Comp for the 2021-22 season will be up at:

Palm Beach (with alternate locations available in case of weather),
Sunday 14 November
Starting 7am, first heat scheduled to hit the water at 7:45 

 

UPDATE 12 NOVEMBER ---------------------------------------

Friday weather guess for Sunday’s Open Surfing.

Not a lot has changed in the grand scheme of things as far as the forecast. However, it does look like the wind maybe a little less furious on Sunday which is awesome.

We still have a nice south swell predicted, and a very small tide, so I am expecting good contestable waves all day. The swell will be abating slowly over the day in combination with the falling tide which will work well.

With the wind still offshore and relatively strong, the Wing expression session will not formally go ahead as part of club proceedings.

Juniors!!! Captain Kev Kevin Claret is going to be there to run, guide and work with the juniors. We have two registered already, so please jump on now (or get Mum and Dad to) and register.

Women, you will be up first at this stage (by request), so please be registered and ready to go! You may end up scoring the best waves of the day.

All up, the rain Is clearing and the waves are pumping, so it’s looking like a cracking day. Look forward to seeing you all early Sunday Morning.

UPDATE 11 NOVEMBER ---------------------------------

The sandwich of 3 days of westerlies, it would appear that Sunday will be windy from the West. However, along with this is a good 10 second south swell in the 1-2m size range (depending which model you look at) and this will bring good contestable waves especially as the tide drops from an early high of 1.14m at 5:21am to a low of 0.51m at 10:58am. A short tight tide with minimal variation will help ensure consistent conditions.

At this point, the location will remain at Nth Palm Beach car park and on Friday’s update, we’ll notify any changes if needed.

Important note: Given the direct offshore nature of the wind and its forecast strength, the Wing-Surfing expression session will not officially be a part of the days event at this point in time. Pittwater side of Palmy will be good for a Wing at your own leisure after the comp if you like but in the interests of your safety I must advise against winging on the ocean side on Sunday.

Only SPSC Members allowed to participate, and all registrations must be done online in advance. 

A few important changes to past seasons:

• Particpants must bring their own refreshments.
• Social distancing rules must be followed at comp area, so please spread out.
• Hand sanitizer will be available at the tent, and sanitizing wipes will be used to clean scoring equipment between heats.

And our standard Open comp details:

• Three divisions will be run depending on numbers: Mens, Womens and Juniors.
• There will be a heat progression system in place including a repercharge round so every surfer will compete at least twice.
• Final placings on the day will earn points for the annual Open SUP Surf pointscore.
• All competitors are expected to remain at the event site for the entire duration of the heats as judging is pre-allocated so everyone gets a turn to judge a heat.
• Heats will be 20 minutes long and run back to back.
• All competitors are expected to wear leg ropes and allocated coloured rash vests.
• Rides will be judged on style, length of ride, positioning, wave selection, difficulty of ride/maneuvers and all round performance. Points will be allocated in reflection to the intensity and difficulty of the moves performed.
• All competitors are expected to be at the marshalling tent around 7am, for a 7:20am riders briefing and 7:45am potential start. Given smooth running of heats this will have things wrapped up by around 1pm.
• All general surfing rules, common sense and good sportspersonship are expected at all times.
