Unfortunately, we have made the decision to cancel the event. Palmy is a straight close out. No one is even out surfing today, as the waves are just not inviting. Due to low registration numbers, we feel its best to cancel.

We will try to do a make-up event in July. Stay tuned for updates.

Our 3rd Open Comp for the 2021-22 season is here!

Palm Beach (with alternate locations available in case of weather),
Sunday 12 June
Starting 7am, briefing at 7:15, first heat straight after.

**************************** JUNE 9 UPDATE  ****************************

Well it is definitely winter. Chilly west winds have kicked the snow season into gear with a cracker of a season start, but it has also kicked the winter swell season into gear also. Sunday 12th June is Open Surf SUP, and the forecast is looking pretty BIG!

 

With a solid swell already in place it is forecast to grow as we approach the weekend before peaking on Sunday (potentially over 4m swells by the afternoon). A few days out, and things can definitely change, so please stay tuned, but for now I propose the event will be at south Palm Beach between the rocks and change sheds.

 

Swell from the South in the 3-4+m range will produce some solid waves. Offshore winds in the 15-25kn range with an early high tide at 6:09am at 1.3m and the next low at 12:03pm at 0.31m. There’s a strong chance it may be somewhat cold with predicted temps forecast between 8-15 degrees during the morning, so ensure you have a dry wetsuit or two ready to roll.

 

I will be checking the banks and conditions Friday and Saturday ahead of the Saturday forecast update (usually around 10am) and will make any final calls to location or running changes close to midday Saturday if needed.

 

But until then, please register if you intend to compete. This is the best way to stay in touch if we need to update you through the club messaging system.

A few important changes to past seasons:

• Particpants must bring their own refreshments.
• Social distancing rules must be followed at comp area, so please spread out.
• Hand sanitizer will be available at the tent, and sanitizing wipes will be used to clean scoring equipment between heats.

And our standard Open comp details:

• Three divisions will be run depending on numbers: Mens, Womens and Juniors.
• There will be a heat progression system in place including a repercharge round so every surfer will compete at least twice.
• Final placings on the day will earn points for the annual Open SUP Surf pointscore.
• All competitors are expected to remain at the event site for the entire duration of the heats as judging is pre-allocated so everyone gets a turn to judge a heat.
• Heats will be 20 minutes long and run back to back.
• All competitors are expected to wear leg ropes and allocated coloured rash vests.
• Rides will be judged on style, length of ride, positioning, wave selection, difficulty of ride/maneuvers and all round performance. Points will be allocated in reflection to the intensity and difficulty of the moves performed.
• All competitors are expected to be at the marshalling tent around 7am, for a 7:20am riders briefing and 7:45am potential start. Given smooth running of heats this will have things wrapped up by around 1pm.
• All general surfing rules, common sense and good sportspersonship are expected at all times.
